IZNIK ART

A MAGNIFICENT HERITAGE FROM THE HISTORY: IZNIK TILES

Chintemani Design
Worldwide famous Iznik Tiles reached their zenith in the 16th-17th centuries during the Ottoman period, but due to several reason, their production and related know how totally vanished in the 18th century.
Iznik quartz tiles are the result of extremely difficult production methods which when carried out successfully, is realized with an extra-white undercoating, very hard glaze and under glaze decoration. Due to the fact the biscuit the undercoating and the glaze contain % 85 of quartz and also that the composition of all involved materials is distributed across a wide thermal spectrum at temperatures exceeding 900 C, these tiles are recognized in ceramic literature as being very difficult to achieve.

The quartz tiles contain a network of pores which act to protect them against the effects of extreme minus and plus temperatures by allowing the four layers of the tile both to expand and to contract.

Sounds  are absorbed with the help of the network of pores and because the layer of glaze has a reflecting feature, sound waves can be spread homogeneously, creating an acoustic effect. That is one of the reasons why these tiles are used in the mosques.
The quart mineral and the network of pores help heat isolation that makes the room breathe and keep   them warm during winter and cool in summer.

As the layer of glaze reflects the light in the correct way, the colors under the glaze are shiny. Thus the rooms look wider and more spacious.
The smooth layer of glaze allows water  to flow, therefore it avoids bacteria formation and prevents the surface to become mouldy. Thus Iznik Tiles can be used outdoors and in wet areas. They strengthen the structure of the walls they are applied on, thanks to their durability and weight.

The colors used in the tiles especially  the coral red, include complex mixtures and are much difficult  to obtain and apply. These colors which are obtained according to the traditional methods, reflect the shades of semi-precious stones such as malachite, coral, lapis lazuli and protect their luminosity for centuries. In terms of form and design Iznik tiles are a perfect decorative element in modern architecture.
